Episode 48: "A Christmas Yule log where the Yule log is YOU!"

December 22, 2021

Happy Spooky Wednesday and Happy Holidays, friends! This is our first ever Holiday themed episode! Well, kinda… who knew that spontaneous human combustion could have so much in common with the Christmas Season! Chestnuts roasting on an open fire? More like human flesh roasting randomly in a lounge chair. And Kala talks about the Moonville Tunnel in Ohio, where a history of people walking on active train tracks caused a lot of people to be squished to death. This has resulted in a lot of ghostly activity in and around the tunnel. Victorian England used to have a tradition of listing to ghost stories on Christmas Eve, so we think listening to these spooky tales will be a great way to spend your Christmas Eve Eve Eve. Have a safe and healthy holiday, y’all!

Episode 46: “Billy Bob and his brother Willard—” **uncontrollable laughter**

December 8, 2021

Happy Spooky Wednesday! This week Kala is telling you about the Milton School House in Alton, Illinois. Yep, we’re back in Alton, and it’s still haunted. And Brittany talks about the Belvoir Winery and Inn in Liberty, Missouri. Both locations experience a lot of residual hauntings. And while they may have started out as buildings with a dark past, they are now both successful businesses. While their owners may or may not embrace this haunted history, we know one thing for sure: We. Are. Interested.

Episode 44: "You gotta be pretty schwasted to have a mural come to life."

November 24, 2021

Happy Spooky Wednesday, folks! This week Kala is telling you about Robert the Doll, an object that is over 100 years old and brings misfortune to those who displease it. But to be fair, you might be displeased too if a grown-ass man carried you around with him for his entire life and blamed all of his bad actions on you. And Brittany talks about The Old Talbott Tavern in Bardstown, Kentucky. This old building has a history of famous guests, guns, liquor, and hauntings. And we think those hauntings are probably amplified from the whole "famous guests, guns, and liquor" thing. Before you even ask:
Yes, dolls are even creepier when it’s a grown man blaming their terrible actions on them.
Yes, Bardstown is real and not just a city from your D&D campaign.
No, Kala does not know who half of the historical figures that Brittany references in this story are.
Yes, you should absolutely check it out.

Episode 42: "Maybe people in California just assume everyone in the Midwest has possums in our walls."

November 10, 2021

Happy Spooky Wednesday! This week Kala takes over with the extra-long tale of the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, WI. This hotel has a long, surprisingly un-tragic history, and yet it's still haunted AF. There are tales of mischievous ghost activity in the halls and rooms of this hotel as reported by major league baseball players, Megan Thee Stallion, and Joey Lawrence among many others. Lights flickering. Mysterious shadows. Quick knocks with no one at the door. Clothing flying around. Could this be the spirit of Charles Pfister haunting his creation? Or just possums in the walls? Because apparently, possums in the walls are what you can expect when visiting the Midwest.

Episode 40: “If they’re pillaging and you’re… pinching?”

October 27, 2021

Happy Spooky Wednesday and a HAPPY HALLOWEEN TO ALL! For our last episode of the spooky season, we are wrapping up our Urban Legends October series with one extremely well-known urban legend and one very not-well-known legend. First, Kala talks about the Hook Man. A story told so many times that there is no solid foundation. Is it a symbol of a girl's fear of her own sexuality? Is it a strange retelling of historical events? At this point, who knows? All we know is it's creepy, it's probably totally fake, and we love to tell it. And Brittany talks about Gjengangers, a strange ghost/zombie/vampire hybrid that rises from the dead to pinch you to death. Yeah. You heard that right. Pinch you to death. Unless you perform some extreme cardio with their coffin.

Episode 38: “I hate… I hate… HATE when animals have human teeth.”

October 13, 2021

This week we are continuing on with our Urban Legends October series. The stories this week are based on the classic creepypasta tales we grew up reading right before bed, ensuring you'll never get a good night's sleep. Brittany talks about Slender Man, a character so well known and so well believed that it has been the catalyst behinds some real-life tragedies. And Kala talks about the email forward that became a thing of nightmares known as smile.jpg or Smile.dog. Faceless, pale people showing up in photographs... possibly with tentacles? Weird images of dogs with human teeth that may or may not appear in your nightmares every night for years? They might be fake, but are you so sure that you're willing to ignore their instructions? You can look this stuff up on your own after listening, but remember this is a total R.L. Stein-style scenario. Reader beware you're in for a scare.

Episode 36: “Everything that I read said that all of the ghosts seemed super hip… super chill.”

September 29, 2021

This week is heavily and unintentionally inspired by the TV show Supernatural. Kala is talking about one of her favorite cursed objects this week: James Dean’s Porsche 550 Spyder known better as “Little Bastard”. This car caused problems wherever it, or parts of it, went. Cars and ghostly tragedies? The only thing that would possibly make this better is if a wrestler were somehow involved. Brittany talks about the Eldridge Hotel in Lawrence, KS, where there are a lot of ghosts. Oddly helpful ghosts. Ghosts who just want guests to be comfy and cool and hydrated. Ghosts who just want to ride the elevator sometimes. And why do bell hops gotta be screaming at them? They just wanna chill out here.

September 15, 2021

Happy Spooky Wednesday everyone! This week, Kala talks about Smallett's Cave near Ava, MO that is allegedly home to the spirit of a headless cobbler that still roams the roads around the cave. But is it really a spirit, or is it something else? Brittany tells us about the historic Bullock Hotel in Deadwood, SD where Seth Bullock is said to still haunt the halls. Kala is excited to learn all about this man and his impressive mustache but is less excited to learn that he looks nothing like Timothy Olyphant. BONUS: Kala shares her theories about ghost dinosaurs, and Brittany has a dream come true through Twitter.

Episode 32: "Serial killer slash wizard?!"

September 2, 2021

Happy Spooky Thuuuuuuuuursday? WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING? While the timeline may be a bit different this week, the stories are as good as ever. It's a shabby to chic week as Kala tells us about the run-down and broken Pattowattamie Jail House Museum (better known as the "Squirrel Cage Jail") in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Brittany gives us the details of the adorable and fancy Terrace Inn and 1911 Restaurant in Petoskey, Michigan. While they're two very different buildings, they're both haunted AF. This episode has poorly designed buildings, maybe ghost cats (??), the weird basement boy, a piano that plays by itself, and Kala breaking out into song... again.

Episode 30: "I literally googled 'Franklin Castle + porn'!"

August 18, 2021

This Spooky Wednesday marks our 30th episode! We're celebrating the same way we celebrate every week, by telling you some haunted tales! Kala talks about the mystery of The Vanishing Hitchhiker and the history behind this very old legend. And Brittany tells us about The Franklin Castle in Cleveland, OH, where a revolving door of owners and renovations (and porn? maybe?) has led to some very strange occurrences. And of course, since Ohio is mentioned in this episode, Kala has to burst into song at least once! We end the episode with a Reddit tale that is sure to leave you smiling.

Episode 28: "It’s very traumatic to be eaten, even if you’re already dead."

August 4, 2021

This Spooky Wednesday the world is on fire, and it may or may not be reflected in our podcast. We head out to California this week for both of our locations. Kala tells us about her own experiences taking The Donner Pass in Northern California. The story of the Donner Party is tragic, and it's easy to see how this area is now haunted by the people who met their tragic end here. Travel + short cuts = cannibalism? Brittany takes us down to Southern California to talk about the Whaley House in San Diego. How is it that a house can have ghosts before it is ever built? Brittany knows. Construction + men who were hung for attempted boat theft = haunting? This episode is sure to have you questioning the decision-making skills of many people in the 1800s. No wonder so many ghosts are from this time.

Episode 24: “If they accept ribs, I don’t know why they’re so concerned about the spine thing.”

July 7, 2021

This week we’ve got witches (well… maybe witches) and cryptids! Kala talks about Whitewater, WI, which is also known as the Second Salem, as a listener request. This city has tales of the witches and ghosts that plague the town going back over a hundred years. Is it really haunted, or is it a college town that just keeps spreading outdated rumors from years ago? Brittany tells us about Crawlers, the basis for a very popular creepypasta. These creepy, lanky cryptids are encountered in the woods and Brittany shares stories from people who have encountered them across the United States and Canada. It’s July. We’re hot and sweaty and it certainly makes the spooky stories kick in more… So much so that Kala forgets which band performs “Carry on my Wayward Son”.

Episode 22: “Oh my god… they are DKEs!”

June 23, 2021

This week brings us a fake hospital, a professional feline, a dumb fraternity ritual, and cuddles from a burnt, disembodied arm. Kala talks about the Crescent Hotel & Spa in Eureka Springs, AK. This hotel located in the Ozarks has a complicated past that contributes to it being one of the most haunted hotels in America. Brittany tells us tales from Kenyon College in Gambier, OH. Students that attend this college often leave with many ghostly tales from all around campus including the dormitories, lecture halls, pool area, and surrounding campus area. Both locations are packed with stories from guests and students that show just how haunted they really are.

This week Kala is talking about Summerwind, a mansion that once stood on the shores of West Bay Lake in Wisconsin! Once a beautiful summer lake home with a less than beautiful history, it is now simply a foundation with stairs and a chimney after it burned down in 1988. And Brittany introduces Obojoki, also known as the monster of Lake Okoboji in Iowa. May 26, 2021

Kala talks about the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City, MO, a building that once earned the name “the bloodiest 47 acres in America”. Closed in 2004 after holding violent criminals for 168 years, some of the inmates seem to have stuck around the grounds. Brittany discusses the Wabasha Street Caves in St. Paul, MN. These caves, which have been used for a number of activities including growing mushrooms and gangster big band parties, are actually mines! Fun fact. Another fun fact… they are haunted.

And Brittany discusses the Central State Hospital, formerly known as the Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane in Indianapolis, IN. Episode 49: "And then tragedy struck… as is what happens in most of our stories."

December 29, 2021

Happy Spooky Wednesday! This week Kala will be telling us about the haunting of the now Nederlander Theater in Chicago, IL which sits on the site of the devastating Iroquois Theater Fire, whose victims haunt the still-active theater. Its creepy, and drama-nerdy, and honestly kind of a bummer at times, but still a good story. Especially if you're a fan of shadows waiting in the wings and creepy non-existent arms touching you in alleys. And Brittany discusses the crumbling Sauer Castle in Kansas City, KS. This building has reports of lights that are seen by neighbors from the look-out towers, strange laughing, and feelings of not being alone as well as a series of other reports. Kala seems more bothered that she’s not 100% what a widow's walk is, whether or not the tower collapsed, and that this family seemed to have way too many kids.

Sit back, relax, and take an hour for yourself to enjoy this episode! As Kala says "Nothing better for real life escapism than 800 different 'fake-life-things' to focus on." Let us be one of those fake life things for you! Haha.

Episode 47: "Oars and sharp sticks against a lake monster? Fer f**k's sake."

December 15, 2021

Happy Spooky Wednesday, friends! This week we're all about Wisconsin! Kala starts us off with the mystical Rock Lake near Lake Mills. What secrets does this water hold? Apparently... like two. First, there are mysterious pyramids of an unknown origin on the lake floor, and second, there might be a lake monster named Rocky slithering about. If you're swimming and you hear a loud hissing noise, it may be time to get out of the water. Next, Brittany takes us to the haunted Milwaukee location called Shaker's Cigar Bar. What could be the cause of these ghostly stories? Maybe it’s the fact that it was built on top of a cemetery? Maybe it’s the fact that there are skeletons stuck in the basement concrete? Maybe it’s the spirits leftover from its days as a brothel? Honestly, you could pick and choose any of them and it would probably make sense. To finish it all up, we have a story from Kala’s Weird Wisconsin book that she is not-so-subtly hoping will freak her mom out. Sorry, mom.

Episode 43: "I grew up Lutheran, we don't even have exorcism rites... lameos."

November 17, 2021

This week Kala went to a sexy little place called Whispers Estate in Mitchel, Indiana. It might sound like something you'd see on late-night satellite TV, but the history is a lot less scandalous, and a lot more ghosty. Unless you find affordable real estate with hauntings included sexy... If that the case you're gonna love it. Brittany talks about a good ol' fashioned midwest exorcism with The Exorcism of Anna Eklund. Kala makes several inappropriate comments and we establish that it is extremely lame that Lutherans never get to have exorcisms.

Episode 41: "KALA! GAY STREET!"

November 3, 2021

This Spooky Wednesday we’re heading to New York! Kala starts by talking about two different locations in Greenwich Village, New York City. The famous Washington Square Park, where tons of people walk around every day… walk around on the burial ground of thousands of bodies. Bodies that keep turning up with every redesign and road construction. And a short walk away on Gay Street, you might encounter the Phantom of Gay Street, who may be a tulpa or he may just be a dapper gent stuck in an afterlife loop attempting to get home from a drunken party. And Brittany takes us to the Morris-Jumel House… a historical house haunted by its less-than-reputable former owner Eliza. Her name was Eliza, but not that Eliza. Not a Schuyler sister, but a good friend of Aaron Burr, sir.  Bonus points if you can catch every Hamilton reference Kala makes during Brittany’s story. There's a lot of them. And while Brittany may not have gotten the Hamilton references, she definitely did not miss the Ghostbusters detail that Kala tried to sneak in.

Episode 39: “When I straightened myself out with another abnormal crunch?”

October 20, 2021

It's our third episode of our Urban Legends October and we are traveling across the world to tell you tales from Japan. Kala starts out this week with the story of Kuchisake-onna, or "Slit-mouthed woman", who has existed in folklore since the Edo period. This deadly yokai sneaks up upon unsuspecting humans to ask them a simple question that has no simple answer. Just trust us when we say you don't want to be asked. Brittany then tells the tale of Teke-teke, the spirit of a young woman who met a terrible fate and haunts many places to share that same fate with others. You can tell when she's nearby because of the tell-tale sound she makes of teke-teke-teke-teke. It could be anywhere! Even the bathroom. Apparently, it's often the bathroom. That's just rude. Episode 37: "Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline. Maybe it's the souls of many young girls."

October 6, 2021

The first spooky Wednesday of the spookiest month of the year, which brings us to the first special series in our podcast history: Urban Legends October! To mark our very special episode is a very special guest: Adam Herman! He is a singer, songwriter, author, and all-around badass that you may have heard in The Slamming Doors, The Oddville Revue, or The PodCostner. This week we all discuss one of the best-known urban legends around, Bloody Mary. Is this urban legend the ghost of a woman who burned almost 300 people in the name of catholicism? Is she a witch that was accused of killing village children to keep her youth? Is she simply the product of an overzealous group of preteens? All we know is this urban legend took on a life of its own at some point and continues to be spread across the world where a bunch of young people try to invoke the spirit of this murderous woman. And we have no idea why. Do you?

Brittany takes us to the Punderson Manor in Newbury Township, OH, where there is a surprising lack of puns for such a punny name. This Spooky Wednesday, we go back to the Midwest! Kala talks about Kemper Hall in Kenosha, Wisconsin. This building (formerly known as Durkee Mansion, a name that Brittany finds hilarious) is haunted by headless nuns, random footsteps, and shadow creatures that roam the lawns and walls. A fact that the county doesn't want to scare away future wedding rentals, but we think it should really attract them. Brittany talks about The Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky. Another hospital haunted by years of deaths caused by a pandemic, though apparently not haunted enough because some people still thought it'd make a good apartment building or prison. Also... Posada Del Sol is an abandoned hotel with creepy altars in its basement and bones in its walls. And Mexico City's airport keeps ghosts in its planes. First Kala talks about Road L in Nebraska City, Nebraska. It is better known to its residents as Seven Sister's Road.
